Find Meaning in the Filipino: a people with a true sense of Filipino pride, personal integrity and a commitment to positive change. This is the call and mission of the Francis Magalona Foundation.

One thing Francis and I shared was our love for analyzing why the Philippines is the way it is and Filipinos are the way we are? We’d often come to the conclusion is that the Philippines has no system and any systems we do have we don’t respect. One would say, who cares? Why should I bother? Why even complain, nothing is going to happen anyway?

We cared, it mattered to us because we were raising a family. We had eight young ones looking to us for guidance. Naturally as parents, it was our responsibility to set an example. It wasn’t even a question of should or if, it was a given. Our children needed to know how to engage the world-to be proud of who they are, to stand by their values and to be agents of change. I, through the best way I know, strive to be a mom for them making decisions based on my principles and values. While Francis through his music and lyrics showed them how their unique talents could make a difference.

For over 20 years, Francis’ music has been inspiring Filipinos, still the economic, social and cultural problems Francis sings about exist. It’s time we address the root of the problem – the Filipino is lost. They don’t really know themselves – they don’t know what values to prioritize, they don’t have the opportunity to dream big for themselves. Their relationships snub their greatness. All these lead to the bigger problems of poverty, crime and apathy. I am reminded of Francis’ call to start with the self.

We need to strengthen the core of each Filipino. How do we do that? We sincerely ask ourselves – For Me, the Filipino is_________? By taking the time to identify the positive characteristic that is definitely Filipino, we take the first step to transforming ourselves and our nation.

Through the Find Meaning in the Filipino campaign, we invite every Filipino to rediscover their core, their context and the potential to be great where they are, to ask themselves the significance of their roots, of their blood – of being a Filipino. The campaign hopes to rouse the sleeping, kept desire of every Filipino to be a Filipino, to be proud of it, to embrace it, and to transform this into a commitment and engaging advocacy.

The Filipino is full of faith – faithful. Yes, we do have to act now and start with ourselves, where we are no matter how small or seemingly insignificant our circle of influence is. Amidst crab mentality, ningas-kugon, and other negativities, keep the faith.
